AbstractThis dissertation advances an alternate vision for research and teaching in rhetoric and composition studies that centers on the development of online writing archives. To justify the need for this alternate vision, it assesses the limitations of the field's predominant research and teaching program: process theory. More specifically, it examines how the rhetoric of student empowerment, which guides the theory and practice of process pedagogy, produces dangerous effects that are at odds with its political aims. In an effort to circumvent these dangerous effects, it proposes a theoretical and pedagogical shift where the "what" of writing takes center stage as questions concerning "how" move to the periphery. Whereas process-oriented instruction has been traditionally oriented toward helping students learn to compose more effectively and efficiently, this approach focuses on the study of writing for its own sake. This pedagogical shift toward "what" suspends expectations about how writing instruction should unfold and thereby creates a space where revision is possible. The online writing archives that this project proposes to generate will aid in the development of a "what"-centered pedagogical approach, as well as help rhetoric and composition scholars research the phenomenon of writing with increasing insight and complexity.
