AbstractThis mixed methods study examined the various aspects of multimodal use of non-verbal communication in virtual worlds during dyadic negotiations. Quantitative analysis uncovered a treatment effect whereby people with more rhetorical certainty used more neutral non-verbal communication; whereas people that were rhetorically less certain used more emotional non-verbal communication elements. Several patterns uncovered in discourse analysis demonstrated that people used non-verbals to demonstrate agreement or concern, to disambiguate and reduce uncertainty, to repair the negotiation task, to introduce humor and to put rhetorical pressure on their opponent. When surveyed, participants did not see their non-verbal communication use as rhetorically important despite picking up subtle differences of their own behavior and their partner that were confirmed by the quantitative and qualitative analysis.
