AbstractMany rural North Dakota communities struggle with the loss of services, schools, and population due to a changing landscape, but does a strong sense of community help anchor residents to their town? The purpose of this study was to describe sense of community and its relationship to actions promoting social capital in rural North Dakota towns. Participants (n = 547) were residents of rural North Dakota communities that had been involved in an 18-month community development program. A survey developed with items from various indices measuring sense of community and social capital was administered during community meetings as well as online. A multiple linear regression using sense of community as the dependent variable showed that those living in the community longest, those involved in organizations, and those planning to stay at least five more years had the highest sense of community when all socio-economic demographics were combined. Bi-variate correlations showed a modest positive relationship (r = 0.47) between sense of community and overall social capital by participants. Findings suggest that engagement in community through social and organizational involvement can help build sense of community in rural North Dakota towns. The study provides rural North Dakota community leaders with suggestions to engage residents and connect them to their town increasing the potential to keep them there long term.
