AbstractThis interpretive collective case study sought to fully understand and describe the experience of women leaders who took a career break to be stay-at-home mothers. Five women leaders representing a variety of industries and leadership roles participated in the study. Multiple methods were used to collect data with participant interviews being the primary source. Interviews with individuals associated with the transition experience of the participants, observations, and a review of available documents were used to provide alternative perspectives. Data analysis was completed within each individual case and then across cases. The findings resulted in five information-rich portrayals that described the lived experience of each individual and five cross-case themes that provide insight into the phenomenon studied. This research is significant in that it provides a unique lens on the intersection of the fields of parenting, leadership, and career development from the perspective of women leaders who are also mothers. It has implications for organization development practitioners who work with organizations to attract and retain talented women leaders.
