Abstract	There has been speculation as to how college students develop normative descriptive and injunctive perceptions of college student alcohol use. One possible explanation is that parents may be "carriers" of the skewed social norm, passing on their misperceptions of alcohol use to their children (Perkins, 2002). The influence of parents was explored by the current study; specifically the potential influence of parental alcohol use and parental injunctive and descriptive normative perceptions on college student's injunctive and descriptive normative perceptions of college student alcohol use and their alcohol use. A second goal of the study was to examine what, if any, impact the relationship between parent and child has on the degree to which parental alcohol use and parental injunctive and descriptive normative perceptions of college student alcohol use influence college student injunctive and descriptive normative perceptions of alcohol use. The results suggest that college student injunctive normative perceptions are influenced by both perceived parental injunctive normative perceptions and by perceived father alcohol use. College student descriptive normative perceptions were influenced by perceived parental descriptive normative perceptions and by perceived mother alcohol use. The degree to which fathers influence their children's descriptive normative perceptions varied by parent child relationship, that is, within the context of a better relationship the perceived descriptive normative perceptions of the father had less influence over the descriptive normative perceptions of the child. The influence of mothers was not found to vary by mother-child attachment. There is evidence to support that college student descriptive normative perceptions mediates the relationships between perceived mother descriptive normative perceptions, perceived mother alcohol use and college student alcohol use. There was not support for a similar mediating relationship between the father variables and college student variables. Exploratory analyses were conducted to evaluate the direct relationship between the parental variables and college student alcohol use; perceived parental alcohol use and perceived parental descriptive normative perceptions were both significantly related to college student alcohol use.
