AbstractThe family is a system affecting each member directly and indirectly. This study examines the effect on the family when mother returns to graduate studies. This study also focuses attention on the child's report of how mother's returning to school affects the parents and the child. In the current study four women commencing studies for their master's degree participated with their children (ages 8 through 15 years old). This is a qualitative longitudinal study utilizing three tools: (1) three assessments at two separate timed intervals, (2) in depth interview with each mother separately and with each child separately, and (3) a focus group with the adult participants. Themes emerging in the adults' interviews were reason for return, need for support, importance of insuring low disruption of family, variety of difficulties, examples of other students and positive benefits. One overriding theme seemed to dominate the children's interviews: all four children voiced some kind of negative consequence of mother returning to graduate studies. Contradictions between the assessments and the interviews were analyzed. Further recommendations are made in the following areas: program development by universities in the area of support and preparation for non-traditional students; more research into children's personal perceptions and accounts of the effect on the family and to themselves when change occurs; and more studies into the long reaching effects of change and trauma on a child's present behavior and later adult relationship issues.
