Abstract | The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides nutritious foods that promote the health of low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and preschool children. This study examines WIC participation dynamics of infants and children from 2001 to 2003 using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) and was conducted in two stages, using data from the 2001 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). In the first stage, the authors describe the characteristics of the WIC child participants, including ages, continuity of their spells based on age of entry, and differences in participation by characteristics of the mother and family. In the second stage, a multivariate analysis is used to identify factors that influence entry, continuity of receipt, and exit from the program. Four appendices are included: (1) Weight Construction for the SIPP WIC Dynamics File; (2) Sample Sizes for Chapter II Table; (3) Analysis of Continued WIC Participation by Infants and Children:and (4) Exploratory Analysis of the Dynamics of WIC Program Participation by Mothers. (Contains 51 footnotes, 5 figures and 35 tables.) (ERIC). |
