| Abstract | The metanarrative of modernity as constructed by language arts teaching in Malawian classrooms constructs an identity among Malawians that denies the multiplicity of influences, including the participation of Malawian and other African societies, in the narrative of the creation of school knowledge. It also perpetuates the marginality of indigenous paradigms of knowledge. This metanarrative can be traced back to the 19th century, when the earliest missionaries opened mission schools that combined Bible/Christian educators with English education. The paper discusses how contemporary Malawians' identity is negotiated through the educational paradigm of 19th century modernity and globalization, and is legitimized by the language arts curriculum, believing in the apolitical, ahistorical neutrality of global identity while perpetuating social marginality of learners and indigenous paradigms of knowledge production. The paper describes some of the historical processes that have shaped beliefs in the teaching of language arts in today's Malawian classrooms, and uses the dialectic of modernity as a framework for examining the institutionalization of the beliefs about knowledge creation and the resultant marginalization.
