AbstractThe study of nonverbal communication continues to grow across the spectrum of research in many fields of study. Good textbooks and research studies are available to the scholar and the student, and courses about nonverbal behavior and communication are found in modern curricula. This book focuses on the complex, often hidden, processes that influence human nonverbal behavior. The book is designed for those who are taking a first course in nonverbal communication. Its author believes that a symbolic interactionist approach is useful to both scholars and students. Following a Preface, the book is divided into four parts. Under Part I are these chapters: (1) Making Sense of Nonverbal Communication; (2) Cultural Influences on Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Cultural Processes; (3) Social Influences on Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Social Processes; and (4) Psychological Influences on Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Psychological Processes. Under Part II are these chapters: (5) Gendered Influences on Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Gender; (6) Ethnicity and Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Ethnicity; (7) Aging and Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of the Aging Process; and (8) Technological Influences on Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Communicative Technologies. Under Part III are these chapters: (9) Symbolic Interaction and Nonverbal Communication--Making Sense of Symbolic Interaction; and (10) Interpreting Nonverbal Communication: Problems, Possibilities and Applications--Making Final Sense of Nonverbal Communication. Under Part IV are references, a glossary, and an index. Appropriate notes are included at the end of each chapter as are questions for thought and discussion and suggestions for additional reading.
