| Abstract | Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the two main types of eating disorders. Eating disorders frequently co-occur with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders. People who suffer from such disorders often experience a range of physical health complications. Treatment requires a comprehensive treatment plan involving medical care and monitoring; psychosocial interventions; nutritional counseling; and medical management when warranted. People with eating disorders often do not realize when they need help. Family and friends can be instrumental in assisting them in the interventions necessary for recovery. (Contains 17 references.)
