AbstractSuggesting that students in the intermediate grades can explore the world around them and practice valuable skills in spelling, reading, writing, communication, and language, this book presents cross-curricular units designed to integrate language-arts activities into the study of where and how people live. The units in the book reach diverse needs by working through emotional memory, deductive reasoning, and multiple intelligences. The book features ready-to-use theme-oriented units that integrate the language arts across the science and social science curricula. After an introduction, units in the book are: "Hidden Treasures" (dealing with map study and solving mysteries); "Our Cities and Towns" (in which students research their own cities or towns); "The A-Maizing First Americans" (dealing with Native Americans); and "Awesome Aussies Down Under" (focusing on Australia). Appendixes describe how to create a learning center in the classroom, how to create bulletin boards and file folders, and how to create a book. (Contains a 49-item glossary and 10 teacher resources.)
