Abstract | A study investigated the way in which the field of bilingual education was represented in general periodical literature over an eight-year period (1988-1996). Content analysis methods were used to identify the percentages of negative, positive, and neutral abstracts found under the subject heading of "bilingual education" in the "Reader's Guide Abstracts" and "Reader's Guide Abstracts Select" on CD-ROM. Citations and abstracts from both sets were categorized by four raters as reflecting positive, negative, or neutral attitudes toward bilingual education. Results indicate an overwhelming proportion of negative abstracts in both resources, with the "Select" version having an even greater percentage. Publisher selection criteria and guidelines are examined in relation to standard collection development policy. Implications for bilingual education supporters and media specialists are explored. The need for additional content analysis studies in bilingual education is discussed. Contains graphs, tables, 12 references, and a 47-item bibliography. (MSE) |
