Abstract | A teaching guide and series of exercises for high-intermediate or advanced English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instruction based on the movie "Witness" are presented. The materials are designed primarily to develop English listening and speaking skills and enhance awareness of American culture and the criminal justice system. The teaching guide gives background information on the materials' design, the various classroom teaching activities provided, and some options for classroom presentation for different skill levels. Several additional teacher resources are also cited. The instructional materials themselves consist of: a series of questions to accompany silent previewing of the film and then viewing with sound, and some questions extending to viewing/listening experience; background information on the Amish and on the American criminal justice system; a list of characters; comprehension and extension questions to accompany 31 specific clips from the film; and questions designed to provide the teacher with feedback on the materials' usefulness.
