| Abstract | Parenting attitudes have changed over the ages. This thesis examines past and current viewpoints toward parenting. The independent variables analyzed here include parents' gender, age, marital status, number of children, and children's ages. Dependent variables were taken from scores on four subscales of the Parental Attitudes toward Child Rearing Questionnaire: Warmth, Encouragement of Independence, Strictness, and Aggravation. The sample of 95 questionnaires was collected from randomly selected parents in a Kansas school district. Results supported three generalizations: (1) female parents value warmth more than male parents; (2) female parents are more concerned with aggravation than male parents; and (3) parents of children aged birth-5 years old value warmth more than parents with children aged 6-10 years old. The thesis reports significant statistical interactions for gender of parent, age of parent and encouragement of independence; age of parent, number of children, and encouragement of independence; number of children, age of children, and encouragement of independence; age of parent, marital status of parent, and warmth; age of parent, marital status, and encouragement of independence; gender of parent, age of parent, and strictness; and gender of parent, marital status of parent, and strictness.
