Abstract | This document presents activities that focus on learning measurement as it is used in the real world. The investigative approach used in these activities is designed to encourage middle-school students to explore ways of approaching real-life problems, to discover patterns, and to make and test hypotheses. These activity-oriented explorations are geared toward strengthening students' higher-order thinking skills and estimation. The 24 activities are clustered around three themes: estimating and measuring, discovering patterns and logical connections to create measurement formulas, and making connections through interdisciplinary measurement activities. Each cluster of investigations includes teacher notes with objectives and materials, easily duplicated activity sheets, and suggestions for integrating technology and alternative assessment. (MKR) |
