AbstractA study tested paths predicted by Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) in the context of interactions between 105 Chinese and 283 Anglo-Australian students and 98 academic staff in situations of potential conflict. Videotapes of student-lecturer interactions in which speakers accommodated, over-accommodated, or under-accommodated were rated by ingroup and outgroup students and staff members on non-verbal behavior, appropriateness of behavior, motives, and evaluations of the speakers as people. Results of path analyses indicated general support for the relationships proposed by CAT, in that accommodating behavior was labelled more positively and resulted in more positive evaluations of speakers. Ratings of non-verbal behavior were overwhelmingly determined by actual behavior; in turn, they predicted the way behavior was labelled, which finally predicted ratings of solidarity and, to a lesser extent, power evaluations. In general, however, the ethnicity and sex of the speaker were not strong influences on perceptions or evaluations. (Two figures of data are included and 18 references are attached.) (Author/SR)
