Abstract | This practicum concerned a staff development program designed to promote cultural awareness among the staff members of a high school. The program consisted of three 2-hour sessions of intensive workshops that focused on: (1) the definition of culture; (2) nonverbal communication; and (3) the influence of culture in language development and social integration. The sessions were followed by three weekly 1-hour meetings in which participants shared experiences, concerns, and creative ideas as they implemented the skills learned at each session. During implementation, participants were required to select a limited English proficient (LEP) student to work closely with, for exposure and as a case study. At the end of the program, the student (case study subject) narrated participant's application of knowledge. An analysis of all the objectives and case studies revealed mastery of cultural awareness by the target group. Appendices include needs analysis instruments, training session outlines, pretests, posttests, and evaluation instruments. (Author/AA) |
