Abstract | Discussed are the results of the 1988 Indiana State High School Mathematics Contest, which attracted 2,523 students. Four multiple-choice tests (each with a 90-minute time limit) based on proficiencies listed in the "Mathematics Proficiency Guide" and published by the Indiana Department of Education were used. The tests were: (1) Algebra (first course) containing 48 items; (2) Geometry, 44 items; (3) Algebra (second course), 40 items; and (4) Comprehensive, with 28 items. The paper analyzes student performance on selected items of each test, based on a 20 percent proportional stratified random sample. The analysis focused, in each test, on what the student knew, what the student did not know, and what items made a difference in student performance. Complete copies of all four tests are included in the appendix. (YP) |
