| Abstract | A study was conducted to investigate ministers' interpersonal communicative skills from the viewpoint of their parishioners and to compare the perceptions of restoration tradition ministers (Churches of Christ) with those of other denominations. A 28-item survey investigating a variety of interpersonal communicative skills unique to ministers including listening, greeting, nonverbal characteristics, attentiveness, openness, and interpersonal communicator style was constructed and administered to 589 members of 12 churches. Results were factor analyzed and uncovered two underlying dimensions. The first, entitled comportment, represented the communicative qualities of friendliness, attentiveness, openness, and a comfortable feeling when communicating. The second dimension, entitled indecorous, represented negatively perceived communication behaviors including interruptions, defensiveness, and judgmental communication. Results indicated that restoration ministers were perceived less favorably across the comportment dimension and more favorably across the indecorous factor. Future studies might include other religious traditions, female clerics, as well as a variety of social and contextual variables. (Three tables of data are included.
