Abstract | This document contains a workshop presentation for elementary mathematics teachers. The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate methods for teaching computational concepts beginning with concrete materials and moving to expressing these concepts abstractly with numerical symbols. Section headings are: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Sorting and Classifying"; (3) "Beginning Number Concepts"; (4) "Place Value" (providing activities about how the base ten number system works); (5) "Addition"; (6) "Subtraction"; (7) "Multiplication"; and (8) "Division." For each concept the format for teaching is provided. The appendices contain transparencies and five references. (YP) |
