AbstractThis practicum was designed to get parents of third grade students more involved in the math homework process. The primary goal was to enlist parents' help at home in the teaching of responsibility and time-management skills, and in the monitoring of the completion and return of this homework. A second aim was to increase the students' overall math achievement through consistent interaction between home and school. First a needs assessment survey was administered; next a parent workshop was held; and finally, a homework monitoring system was developed to bridge the gap between home and school. Results of the practicum show that parents learned the value of math homework, homework monitoring system were administered. Results of parent evaluation shows that parents who learned the value of math homework began to accept more responsibility for encouraging their child to do schoolwork at home, and learned math teaching methods. Through this parental involvement, 41 out of 51 students raised their rate of consistent homework return, and this, in turn, resulted in an increase in their math test scores and overall mathematics grades. The appendices include survey materials, parent workshop transparencies and materials, newsletters, teacher homework data sheets, and letters. Fifteen references are listed. (Author/YP)
