| Abstract | The aim of this book is to assist people who use interviewing as a means of gathering information. It is a practical guide to more effective techniques and provides methods relevant to a variety of contexts. After a review of the psychological bases of interviewing, the types of interview are discussed as follows: (1) personal data reporting; (2) opinion polls or sample surveys; (3) research interviews; (4) clinical interviews; (5) key informant interviews; (6) guided interviews; (7) focused interviews; (8) mass media interviews; (9) group interviews; (10) job interviews; (11) telephone interviews; and (12) combined methods. Ways of structuring the interview and techniques of interviewing are considered. Particular attention is given to non-verbal communication and how non-verbal communication cues can be used to facilitate the aims of the interview. Techniques are presented for handling difficult cases, when respondents are hostile, anxious, too agreeable, or unusual in other ways. Interviewing thorough an interpreter, and the interview as a research tool are also addressed. (SLD) |
