AbstractTo gather information for its response to the issue whether to allow the use of hand-held calculators on standardized mathematics tests, the staff at Educational Testing Service (ETS), under the sponsorship of the College Board, developed a questionnaire to poll teachers of college-level mathematics about calculator and microcomputer use in freshman mathematics courses. Four copies of the questionnaire were sent to the mathematics department chair in each of 392 colleges throughout mainland United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Respondents indicated a moderate use of the calculator in college mathematics courses. For instance, in approximately 40 percent of the courses represented, a calculator is needed for some of the homework. Calculator use is noticeably higher in the statistics courses than in other courses. Computers are not used in college mathematics classes as much as calculators are. Respondents varied greatly in their opinions about whether the use of calculators should be allowed on College Board mathematics examinations. Appendices include the survey questionnaire, summary of responses, comments, and a list of participating institutions. (YP)
