Abstract | The purpose of this project is to help teachers of mathematics get started using the computer to aid the teaching and learning of many mathematical concepts in a meaningful way. To this end, commercially available software packages are described which are versatile, cost effective, and easy to use. A review and several lessons, including homework exercises, have been written for each package and are presented in ready-to-use form. Chapter 1, "Polynomial Practice Using Tiles: Discovering Algebra" (Sunburst), includes three lessons about modeling and addition. Chapter 2, "Interpreting Graphs" (Sunburst/Conduit), presents a lesson about the relationship between graphs and events. Chapter 3, "The Geometric preSupposer" (Sunburst), provides five lessons about angles, right triangles, quadrilaterals, and segments. Chapter 4, "Geometric Supposer: Quadrilaterals" (Sunburst), offers three lessons about parallelograms and the trapezoid. Chapter 5 "Superplot" (EduSoft), is a lesson about graphing inverse functions. Chapter 6, "Introductory Statistics Software Package" (Addison-Wesley), contains four lessons about mean, standard deviation, distribution, sampling and correlation. The last chapter, "The Whatsit Corporation: Survival Math Skills" (Sunburst), has five lessons about predictions of impact of price, sales tax, and simulation. (YP) |
