Abstract | The paper reports on a parent training program based on behavior analysis and home-based teaching by the parent of a 2-year-old Japanese boy tentatively diagnosed as autistic. Parent training was divided into three modules: understanding the fundamental principles of teaching by using the knowledge of behavioral principles as applied to children; ABC's (Antecedence, Behavior, Consequence) of observing child behavior; and training in helping techniques. A specialist taught the mother teaching techniques once weekly in the home situation. Child instruction was daily and was divided into four areas: (1) teaching of prerequisite behaviors (sitting on a chair, focusing attention, putting hands in lap, etc.); (2) learning tasks (visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, eye-hand coordination etc.); (3) self-help skills; (4) communication skills (especially personal needs using sign language). The program resulted in the mother learning the teaching principles and applying them appropriately as well as in positive behavior changes in the child. (Author/DB) |
