Abstract	A study was conducted to assess engineers' perceived levels of communication effectiveness, the degree and type of their communication training, and their perceived need for and willingness to receive additional communication training. Questionnaires were mailed to 400 members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Analyses of the 209 returned instruments revealed that engineers viewed themselves as moderately effective in using most job related communication skills--with the exception of nonverbal, employment interviewing, and performance appraisal interviewing techniques. The majority of respondents had received training in most communication skills, except for listening and nonverbal communication. The two most prominent sources for this training were company-based programs and on-the-job training. Results also showed that engineers believed that a variety of communication skills, including presentational speaking, listening, persuasive speaking, group problem solving, leadership, and technical report writing were important to their job performance. Most also thought that they needed additional training in these skills and were willing to receive such training, preferably through company-based programs. (FL)
