AbstractThis project was based on recent interview research which suggested that in choosing operations for story problems in mathematics many students are guided by computational considerations rather than meanings for the operations. This project aimed to refine the catalogue of strategies used by students and to design and test instructional materials intended to foster a concept-based approach to story problems among sixth graders. In the first year of the project (1985-86) students were interviewed, textbooks analyzed, a teaching experiment was conducted, and materials were developed and refined. During the second year materials were tried out, further textbook analysis was conducted and additional student interviews were conducted. The major sections included in this report are: (1) the catalogue of strategies used by students in solving story problems; (2) what textbooks offer; (3) the teaching experiment with sixth graders; (4) the development of the supplementary materials; (5) the try-out of the materials; and (6) the spin-off studies. Four appendixes contain: a list of presentations and publications based on the project; the Story Problem Supplement; and reports to participating teachers of grades 8 and 6 concerning results of the experiment.
