Abstract | Audiovisual, or mass media education can play a significant role in children's social, emotional, cognitive, sensory, motor, and creative development. It includes all school activities which teach children to interact with The field includes all school activities which teach children to interact with visualize ideas. Students can be involved in designing slides, engaging in activities which require viewing and listening, discussing photographs, creating radio shows, discussing television programs, learning darkroom techniques, using audio tapes, comparing newspapers, and compiling photograph albums. Activities can focus either on a child's own creations or on those constructed by others. Three aspects of audiovisual education are design, expression, and communication. Objectives include: (1) gaining insight into the language of images and sound; (2) acquiring knowledge about how the mass media is used for communication; (3) learning to expressively use audiovisual media; and (4) acquiring the ability to use audiovisual methods and equipment. Suggested classroom activities for specific age groups are explained in the text and listed by age groups in three appendices. Appendix four illustrates how to analyze a photograph. (JHP) |
