Abstract"Crime on Campus, 1978-1979: A Survey of 150 College Campuses and Cities" is a machine-readable data file (MRDF) that includes statistics (in the form of 80 variables) on violent crimes and property crimes occurring on campuses and in the cities and municipalities associated with them. Information is given on the number of police on the campus and in the city, the total number of students attending the college, and the number of those residing on campus, with breakdowns by male and female for each category. Average dollar amounts are shown for room and board costs and for in-state and out-of-state fees. Percentages are reported for the unemployed, for persons below the poverty level, for blacks in the city, and for black students, as well as for 15- to 19-year-olds and 20- to 24-year-olds in each city. Miscellaneous variables include data on books in the college library, college applications accepted and enrollees accepting, student-to-faculty ratios, as well as percentage of foreign students, percentages of fraternity and sorority members, and percentage of students receiving financial aid. About 25 states are represented in the list of 150 campuses and cities. These data were collected from several sources. Crime rates and police strength for both cities and campuses were collected from the FBI's 1978 "Uniform Crime Report." Unemployment rates were obtained from the Census Bureau's "Employment and Earnings, 1978" and "State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, 1979." The percent of blacks on campuses was obtained from the U.S. Department of Education's "Racial, Ethnic, and Sex Enrollment Data from Institutions of Higher Education, Fall 1978." Campus variables were collected from various standard college reference guides: e.g., "Comparative Guide to American Colleges,""Barron's Profiles of American Colleges,""The College Bluebook,""The College Handbook,""Peterson's Annual Guide to Undergraduate Study Data,""Comparative Guide to American Colleges." TYPE OF SURVEY: Sample survey. SAMPLE: College campuses and their cities (150). RESPONDENTS: Secondary sources. FREQUENCY: Once. YEAR OF FIRST DATA: 1977. (CDM)
