Abstract | Intellectual mastery of nature was the stated goal of the German physicists of the nineteenth century. In this first of two volumes, an attempt is made to bridge social, institutional, and intellectual history. Separate sections of the book deal with: (1) establishing physics at the universities; (2) German physicists before 1830; (3) promoting earth magnetism as a new physics; (4) reforms in teaching university physics (in particular, the development of the seminar and the laboratory in the 1830's and 1840's); (5) physics research in "Poggendorff's Annalen"; (6) connecting laws (careers and individual theories of the 1840's); (7) contributions of mathematicians to physics; (8) developments in Switzerland and Austria bearing on German physics; (9) physics at German universities from 1840 to 1870; (10) physics in Berlin (with regard to secondary education); (11) physics in Munich (in relation to technology); and (12) Kirchhoff and Helmholtz at Heidelberg (relating physics to chemistry and physiology). A bibliography and an index are included, along with the table of contents of the next volume, "The Mighty Theoretical Physics, 1870-1925." (TW) |
