Abstract | The proceedings of the workshop on the interface between humans and machines in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) include the texts of four papers, descriptions of the software demonstrated, an information exchange section, a report of the plenary session, a comment on the workshop, a list of participants, a review of current research in Britain on developing computer use in language learning and teaching, a list of CALL practitioners and their work in progress, and an essay on the importance of the nonverbal element in language instruction, entitled "Understanding the Meaning without Hearing the Words" (Roger Hancock). The four conference papers are: "Expert Systems and the Language Teacher" (Rachel Rymaszewski); "How Feasible Is It to Develop CAL for Language Learning?" (Deryn Watson); "CALL for Advanced Learners" (Greville Corbett); and "Using Computers in Foreign Language Teaching" (Roger Sparkman). (MSE) |
