Abstract | This student guide is intended to assist persons employed as supervisors to improve their speaking skills. Discussed in the three sections are the following topics: interaction between the speaker and listener (using appropriate verbal and body language for different audiences); purposeful speaking and listening (planning and preparing a discussion, steering a discussion, and sticking to the point as a listener); and speaking on one's own (speaking techniques and speaking from notes). Each of these sections contains an introduction, instructional text interspersed with reinforcing learning activities, and a summary for each section. The fourth part of the guide includes a series of performance checks (an end check, a tutor check, and a work-based project). A unit review, which also includes a description of related extension courses and resources, concludes the guide. (MN) |
