| Abstract | A study explored the extent to which affinity-seeking strategies are used in elementary and secondary school classrooms. Subjects, 311 elementary and secondary school teachers enrolled in classes related to communication instruction, completed a measurement instrument designed to evaluate their use of affinity-seeking strategies. Analysis of the data revealed that when teachers seek increased affinity with students they frequently use such strategies as physical attractiveness, sensitivity, and dynamism. However, such strategies as reward association, self-inclusion, similarity, openness, supportiveness, and conceding control were not often used. Teachers in the lower grades tended to use sensitivity, dynamism, and nonverbal immediacy more often than teachers in upper grades, while presenting interesting self and personal autonomy were used more frequently in the upper grades.
