| Abstract | This document presents an overview and progress report on the Family Research Project, started in 1974 to (1) study the relationship between family process and individual development of family members, especially children, (2) conceptualize and measure system level variables describing family structure and process, (3) develop microanalytic measures of interaction appropriate to operationalize family variables, and (4) study a population of normal (i.e., unlabeled) families. The project's study samples, which were expanded to include both unlabeled (non-clinical) and clinical (child abuse, anorexic) populations, are described. The study methods (home interviews, questionnaires, two revealed difference tasks, and a semi-projective exercise called Paper Sculpture) are also outlined. Two coding schemes developed to study family interactions--the Global Scales, a macroanalytic measure expanded and modified from the Timberlawn scales, and the Interaction Process Coding Scheme, a microanalytic measure that codes oral interaction at the sentence and subsentence level--are appended. Selected research findings relating to family relationships are presented, highlighted by brief annotations and diagrams. A discussion of future research projects, including cross cultural and follow-up studies, concludes the document. (BL) |
