Abstract | The communication activities described in this guide for English as a second language students emphasize functional competence over passive knowledge and focus on verbal strategies which enable students to interact. Communicative competencies are highlighted through stress on developmental levels (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and nonverbal communication, as well as on culture as a component of language learning. This is the first of three volumes with communication activities for the intermediate grades. Each of the three volumes of the series has three components which can be structured and combined to meet the needs of both students and teachers. The components are composed of interchangeable, independent activities that can be closely correlated with the basic language arts curriculum. This volume includes components on (1) shopping for careers (with sections on catering to the guests in a restaurant, preparing a balanced and nutritious meal, and shopping); (2) our advanced technology; and (3) fine arts and humanities. Student material contains narratives, cartoons, games, and other projects of high interest and low readability. Exercises, worksheets, and evaluations are included, along with a detailed procedure section to guide teachers in the implementation of the lesson. (NCR) |
