Abstract | Intended for classroom and prospective teachers, this book presents ways for integrating music, art, and drama into the elementary curriculum. Described are experiences and activities in the arts that can be used as teaching tools in basic elementary school curriculum areas. Contents are selected so that no special training, knowledge, or skills in any of the arts are needed by the teacher to apply the experiences presented. In the first chapter, "The Arts in the Elementary Curriculum," the importance of the arts in the educational process is examined. A number of suggestions are offered for using the arts with children with special needs. Each of the following six chapters is devoted to a particular curriculum area. These include writing, reading, oral language, science, mathematics, and social studies. A unique feature of the book is that every suggested music, art, and drama experience is related to a specific curriculum area and to a particular skill, concept, or instructional objective within that area.
