Abstract | Part of a five-part package (see note) of training materials to teach interviewing skills to human services personnel, this participant's workbook contains all the forms and training aids that would typically be distributed to the participants during the training session. It includes material needed for the various training exercises that are done during the training session and self-assessment checklists for the material covered. The training program defines the skills that interviewers need to ensure that as much relevant information as possible is exchanged during interviews, and it helps turn these skills into lasting habits. Major topics covered in the first six sections of the workbook include how to motivate clients to show up for interviews, how to prepare for initial interviews, how to listen actively and use body language effectively, and how to use different types of verbal responses to achieve objectives and to encourage self-exploration. The last section of the workbook contains forms for self-assessment on the various interview techniques covered in the training session. (KC) |
