Abstract	Intended to assist Agency for International Development (AID) officers, advisors, and health officials in incorporating health planning into national plans for economic development, this seventh of ten manuals in the Interational Health Planning Methods Series deals with pharmaceutical supply systems planning in developing countries. Following an introduction to the topic (chapter 1), chapter 2 describes the scope and intricacies of the sector. Useful as a reference guide, the chapter is organized into four main sections: (1) definitional issues, (2) national pharmaceutical policies as affected by political and economic forces, (3) types of systems and subsystems in the pharmaceutical field, and (4) governmental intervention. Chapter 3 identifies and sets parameters for the main components of a comprehensive pharmaceutical supply system. Chapter 4 discusses geeral approaches and methods to planning and assessment. Discussion in chapter 5 centers on problems of distribution to rural populations. Appendixes provide information on development planning for a pharmacy in a small hospital and local issues and approaches relative to local production of medicinal chemicals. Lists are also given of selected planning and assessment aids and international data sources.
