| Abstract | The role of lexicometry is to furnish statistical data on all measurable aspects of vocabulary. This study presents an inventory of works on the choice of elements of the German language and outlines the methods of compiling vocabulary with specific reference to the method of choosing words useful for the teaching of a language. It also attempts to isolate problems characteristic of lexicometry in general and German lexicometry in particular, and it addresses the question of a possible evolution in German lexicometry, particulary with regard to criteria for selection. The research covers three stages: (1) a compilation of all works in German lexicometry; (2) an analysis of the available literature from Kaeding (1898) to Pfeffer (1971); and (3) an analysis of the work of Kaeding and Pfeffer. The authors between Kaeding and Pfeffer are divided into two groups, those who have used Kaeding's compilation and those who have not used it. The conclusions are both theoretical and practical. They concern the quality of German words, the method, problems, deficiencies, and evolution of research in lexicometry, the utility of the research, and suggestions for further analyses. (AMH) |
