Abstract | The aim of this publication is to provide practical suggestions for elementary and secondary teachers who wish to teach speech as part of language arts or English courses. Following discussions of the importance of speech instruction and of general methods for teaching speech communication at the elementary, junior high school, and senior high school levels, the publication suggests and describes numerous learning activities. The activities are grouped according to two levels--elementary grades, and junior high and secondary level--and are subdivided in each section into activities for teaching basic communication process (sending/receiving), for nonverbal communication, for problem solving, and for extending and expanding communication skills in a variety of experiences. Suggestions for incorporating speech instruction into the traditional language arts curriculum are then provided. The publication includes a selected bibliography of relevant works and lists of other resources, including audiovisual aids, magazines for teachers, and professional organizations. (GT) |
