Abstract	This handbook presents selected theories, activities, and resources which can be utilized by educators in the area of non-verbal communication. Particular attention is given to the use of non-verbal communication in a cross-cultural context. Categories of non-verbal communication such as proxemics, haptics, kinesics, smiling, sound, clothing, and laughter/play are outlined. Ten sets of activities which are common to all cultures are listed and described. Included are the categories of interaction, association, subsistence, bisexuality, territoriality, temporality, learning, play, defense, and exploitation. Cultural considerations in non-verbal communication are illustrated by narrations written by individual members of various ethnic groups. The emphasis in these illustrations is on the different meanings similar gestures, behaviors, and reactions have in different cultures. Classroom activities which can be used to improve and/or clarify students' understanding of non-verbal communication are presented. A bibliography of materials dealing with non-verbal communication is provided. (EB)
