Abstract | Designed to aid high school and college teachers in teaching the fundamentals of listening, this booklet includes sections on theory and on practice. The section on theory discusses the listening process and its importance, examines five purposes for listening (appreciative, discriminative, comprehensive, therapeutic, and critical), and tells how teachers can help students to improve their listening skills. The section on practice describes 38 exercises keyed to specific topics discussed in the first section. The exercises are designed to increase students' skills in such areas as listening for different purposes, concentrating on what is said, interpreting feedback, appreciating oral literature, giving and following directions, and applying nondirective listening in interpersonal communication.
