| Abstract | Contrastive analysis can help solve certain problems in translation, for example, that of idioms. A contrastive analysis of source language (SL) and target language (TL) might have as its theoretical framework a contrastive lexical analysis based on generative semantics. In this approach both SL and TL idioms are broken down into their semantic components and compared. In the first stage of comparison, possible equivalents can be stated on the basis of shared semantic features. In the second stage, these equivalents are contrasted and their differences identified. These may involve differences in form, differences in meaning range, or deceptive cognates. The third step involves finding non-idiomatic TL lexical items that carry the information not covered by the TL idioms. (AM) |
