Abstract | Part One of this report discusses the background and philosophy of the Patterns in Arithmetic (PIA) television program. Mathematical objectives for Grades 1-4 are discussed in detail. Part Two presents the results of a summative, noncomparative evaluation done on the PIA program in Grades 1 and 3 during the 1966-67 school year. Classes in Alabama and Wisconsin participated in the study at both grade levels. The instruments used in the evaluation fall into three categories: (1) achievement tests designed specifically for the PIA program; (2) standardized achievement test; and (3) teacher and pupil inventories.
