Abstract | Reasons for studying the literature of a people may vary. While some value it for its aesthetic qualities only, others view it primarily as a source for providing opportunities for the extension of linguistic skills. An important component often overlooked, however, is that of culture. The type of culture referred to here is of an anthropological nature and has to do with the total way of life of a people, i.e., themes, attitudes and values, thus relating the life of the country or region to the language employed by the characters in the literature. This approach is proposed as an aid for providing fuller meaning to the study of literature. The article suggests basic guidelines which can be used as an instrument for gathering such information, makes sample application of these guidelines to a Spanish novel, "La barraca," by Vicente Blasco Ibanez, and relates to the application various descriptions of Spanish cultural patterns.
