Abstract | This document examines the use of photography and the printed word to make visual statements in student publications. It is written for journalists who are writers and editors as well as for photojournalists and for student journalists interested in increasing the quality of the school newspaper, magazine, or yearbook. The role of the photographer on the publications staff is discussed and numerous photographs are combined with captions and explanations to illustrate different points. Contents include: an introduction to print and photography as a new communication tool; "Student Journalist"; "Photograph--Printed Word"; "Writing with Photographs"; "Photgraphic Statement," with the editor, writer, and photographer working as a team; "Faces," on getting newsmakers to drop their masks; "Groups," the psychology of belonging; "News and History," recording events as they happen; "Sports"; "Features"; "Documentaries"; "Headlines, Cutlines, Text"; "Layout"; "Printing"; and "The Last Step," using color to write the visual message. The appendixes include instructions for sizing photographs, fitting headlines, and fitting copy. A glossary of terms concludes the volume. (RB) |
