Abstract	This is the first in a series of reports concerned with the analysis of a young child's spoken French. The research methodology is described and the corpus used for analysis is presented; the bulk of the analysis concerns the noun phrases used by the child. The main thrust of the report deals with the type of grammar applied to the corpus for analysis; the authors advocate the use of a probabilistic generative grammar which introduces probabilistic parameters which govern the use of a given generative rule and which permit a goodness-of-fit criterion which discriminates between the suitability of two different grammars for the same corpus. Two different grammars are applied to the corpus for analysis and the authors indicate a preference for the second grammar which, although it accounts for a slightly lower percentage of the total utterances in the corpus, provides a better fit in terms of frequency of uses of the generative rules matching the actual frequencies of grammatical types.
