| Abstract | Interest in quantifying nonverbal variables in human interaction has led to the development and application of several nonverbal observation systems. The authors present a selective overview of these approaches, briefly explaining the major assumptions in terms of their differences and similarities. Drawing largely from their own experiences in observing and recording nonverbal behaviors, they outline some pertinent issues that recur in the observance of nonverbal communication, including the question of environment--naturalistic settings vs. laboratory settings; the amount of attention to be given to concomitant verbal behaviors; the development of categorical systems inclusive enough to classify and code every observable or potentially influential behavior; and selection of a method of recording the behavior--laboratory experiments using video-tape.
