Abstract | This unit of 22 related items includes a text, activity book, resource book, workbook, records, and filmstrips, all dealing with the history, present, and future of cities. The program tries to involve third grade children in the cities' problems by helping them feel they should participate in discovering the causes of the major problems cities face. The book is problem oriented, dealing with social and physical realities, intended to help children discover the reasons for conflict and imperfections in society. An interdisciplinary approach uses economics as a core for the other social sciences. Specific cities are profiled, such as Athens, Calcutta, London, Rotterdam, and New York. The resource unit provides the text of plays, poetry, short stories and music related to cities, as well as suggested activities and bibliographies. (CD) |
