Abstract | The cause of the Civil War is interpreted through cultural concepts in this sixth resource unit series designed for sixth grade students. Suggested activity units expose students in some depth to inhumane conditions of slaves, enslavement problems, black exploitation, and revolts stemming from denial of basic humanity, the African background of slaves, and the role of the Negro in the Civil War. After military history is studied, students examine the Reconstruction period and the subsequent development of segregation. Selected readings of primary sources on the Civil War and Reconstruction, and study questions on the readings, are included. The format of the unit is described in Unit I SO 003 147, and detailed information on course objectives, teaching strategies, and program descriptions are provided in the teacher's guide SO 003 146. Other related documents are SO 003 148 through SO 003 153. (Author/SJM) |
